When you turn on instagram two factor authentication, Instagram gives you recovery codes (also called backup codes). These are one-time codes you can use to log in if you don’t have your phone or your authenticator app—for example, if you lost your phone or got a new one.

If you chose Authenticator app: Open the authenticator app on your phone, find the 6-digit code for Instagram, and type it into the Instagram login screen. The code changes every 30 seconds, so use the one you see right now.

If you chose Text message (SMS): Instagram will send a text to your phone with a code. Type that code into the Instagram login screen.

If you don’t have your phone: Use one of your recovery codes instead. Type the code exactly as shown (Instagram will give you a box to enter it). After you log in, that recovery code is used and won’t work again.

Sometimes people can’t find Two-factor authentication in the menu. Here’s what to check.

• Update the app. Make sure you have the latest version of Instagram from the App Store or Google Play. Older versions may not show 2FA in the same place.
• Look in both places. In Settings and privacy, check under Accounts Center → Password and security, and also under Security. The name might be “Two-factor authentication” or “Two-step verification.”
• Scroll down. In Security or Password and security, scroll to the bottom—sometimes the option is lower in the list.
• Log in on the app. Two-factor authentication is set up in the Instagram app (phone), not usually on the website. Use the app on your phone.

If you turned on instagram two factor authentication and you lose your phone or can’t get your codes, you can still get back in if you saved your recovery codes.

If you have your recovery codes: On the login screen, when Instagram asks for a code, look for an option like “Use recovery code” or “Having trouble?” Tap it and enter one of your recovery codes. If you don’t have your recovery codes and you can’t get codes (e.g. lost phone, no SMS): Use Instagram’s account recovery flow. On the login screen, tap “Need more help?” or “Forgot password?” and follow the steps. Instagram may ask you to confirm your identity (e.g. email, photo). Recovery can take a few days.
